EU policies have helped reduce air and pesticide pollution, reports say, but levels remain too high
The Commission published its first report on Zero Pollution Monitoring and Prospects and its third report on Clean Air Outlook on Thursday, which set out ways to achieve cleaner air, water and land.
According to the reports, EU policies have helped to reduce air pollution and pesticide pollution. However, pollution levels remain too high. In other areas, such as harmful noise pollution, nutrient pollution and municipal waste generation, progress remains stagnant. The results show that overall much stronger action is needed for the EU to meet its pollution reduction targets by 2030, through new anti-pollution legislation and better enforcement of existing legislation.
So far the Commission has implemented or taken forward all 33 actions announced in the Zero Pollution 2021 Action Plan. In order for these actions to bear fruit, the report calls for swift agreement on legislative proposals to reduce harmful pollution and the adoption them, as well as improving the implementation of the current legislation at local, national and cross-border level.
