“His professional path placed him in the pantheon of the leading and unsurpassed Greek journalism”, states among other things the announcement of ESIEA on the loss of Giannis Diakoiannis, who died on Tuesday at the age of 91.

ESIEA’s announcement:

“The ESIEA Board of Directors is saddened to announce the loss of the renowned journalist, author, radio producer, television presenter and veteran sportswriter Yiannis Diakogiannis, who passed away today at the age of 91.

Giannis Diakogiannis was born in Athens in 1931. After finishing high school, he studied music and sports journalism in France. He began his journalistic career in 1952 with the newspaper “ATHLITIKI ICHO” as its editor and correspondent in Paris and then followed a remarkable career in the print press at “FOS TON SPOR”, “ELEFTHEROTYPIA” and “MESIMBRINI”, while he was and director of the sports section of the newspaper “TA NEA”.

At the same time, he taught at a private sports reporting center, worked on the radio in the production of sports as well as purely musical shows and left behind books, which are points of reference in sports literature (“100 Years of Football”, “60 Years of the World Cup”, “The Great Forms of Sports” etc.). In 2003, he was the first recipient of the “Elene Vlachou” award for his overall contribution, while in 2018, he was honored by the Educational Foundation of the Editors’ Union, at an event for veterans of sports reporting.

Giannis Diakogiannis, for many the leader in his field, was undoubtedly an iconic figure in journalism and is rightly considered one of the founders of modern sports reporting. He paved the way for subsequent generations of sports editors, taught lessons in proper sports broadcasting and covered most domestic and international events of his time: four Olympic Games, including the 1972 Munich Olympics, the first to be televised in Greece, eight football World Cups, world athletics championships and countless other sporting events, while his career was marked by the presentation of the legendary “Sports Sunday” from 1966 to 1983 on ERT, a show that etched our national collective memory and still constitutes the longest running sports show on Greek television.

“The voice of Diakoiannis”, the voice that marked our Sunday evenings, the voice that became a song in the mouths of fans and non-fans, has been silenced forever. All who met him and all who followed his course will remember him exactly as he was: haughty and imposing, broad-minded and lucid in his descriptions, noble and elegant in his manners, connoisseur but also a lover of his subject. He was a teacher for younger colleagues and a shining example of eloquence, talent, hard work and objectivity in reporting. After all, it is no coincidence that his professional career placed him in the pantheon of the leading and unsurpassed Greek journalism.

The Board of Directors of ESIEA sympathizes with his relatives and says goodbye to his distinguished colleague, who leaves behind an irreplaceable void and our operation is poorer”.
