He was hired by the Ministry of the Interior to protect Cretan goats, but he was selling them illegally in Epirus

He was convicted last week by the Three-member Court of Neapolis a 66-year-old employee of the Forestry Department of Lasithi who, according to the case file, is accused of he smuggled 45 kri- kri to a private person, a species protected under the Berne Convention.

In fact, as it emerged from the investigations of the competent authorities, as well as from reports in the Bulgarian press, the 45 Cretan kri kri, who had left illegally from Crete in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018, were transferred by the Epirus buyer to Skopje and Bulgaria for poaching. In other words, these beautiful and proud wild animals of the Cretan nature, which are in danger of extinction, were sent outside the Greek borders to be killed.

Involvement of the 66-year-old in deer trafficking

Indeed, during the hearing, it emerged that the said employee of the Lasithi Forestry Department was also involved in illegal deer trafficking.

Some had even been seized from a tourist establishment on the Lasithi Plateau, while some other deer had arrived in Crete from the Epirotian buyer of the kri kri as an illegal “exchange” of wild animals.

Sentenced to 8 months in prison

With a unanimous decision, the Three-member Court of Lasithi condemned the 66-year-old to eight months in prison, while it is worth noting that disciplinary proceedings are pending against him by the Decentralized Administration of Crete.

In particular, the Decentralized has ordered two Sworn Administrative Examinations (SAO) against him in which the 66-year-old employee is charged with multiple responsibilities for breach of duty which have been referred to the Central Disciplinary Council of the Ministry of the Interior with the question of dismissal.
