4.3 Richter earthquake in Evia – Particularly noticeable in Athens

Near Nea Styra the epicenter of the earthquake, in the same place as the previous ones – Lekkas: Aftershock of 5.1 Richter, on the same fault

An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, which was particularly felt in Athens, occurred in the area of Evia, near Nea Styra. Initially, the magnitude of the earthquake was given at 4.2 Richter, in the final revision, however, it was given at 4.3 Richter.

According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 8 kilometers southeast of Zaraki in Evia, while the focal depth was estimated at 5 kilometers.

As Professor Mr. Lekkas stated on SKAI radio, today’s tremor is part of the post-seismic sequence of the 5.1 Richter earthquake and is on the same seismogenic fault.

“We have to monitor the phenomenon. The earthquake is part of the post-seismic sequence of 5.1 Richter, which occurred a few days ago, in the same epicenter.

We cannot be absolutely sure, we think it has exhausted its potential and we are entering a period of normalcy. No one can rule out any possibility, since we do not know the specific characteristics of this fault.

“The urban fabric of the area endures, we are dealing with particularly resistant rocks,” said Professor Efthymios Lekkas.
