According to the voting results, Limassol Athanasios secured 35.68% of the votes and first place. Paphos Georgios ranked second with a percentage of 18.39%

The metropolitans of Limassol, Paphos and Tamasos are the three hierarchs, who are going to claim the anointing of the Primate of the Church of Cyprus, after the first stage of the popular vote that was held yesterday in Cyprus.

According to the voting results, Limassol Athanasios secured 35.68% of the votes and first place. Second with a percentage of 18.39% was Paphos Georgios and third was Tamasou Isaias with 18.10%. Fourth in votes is the Metropolitan of Constantia and Famagusta Vasilios with 14.79%, fifth is Morphou Neophytos with 9.80% and sixth is Chrysostomos of Kyrenia with 3.24%.

As foreseen by the procedure, the first three hierarchs who have received the people’s vote will also be the candidates for the archbishopric post, since the Holy Synod will choose the new archbishop from among them.

As stated by the Metropolitan of Paphos and custodian of the archbishop’s throne George, there will be a period of three days for possible submission of objections and next Thursday the Holy Synod will meet to ratify the Tri-person, setting the day of election of the Archbishop.

In his statements, the General Superintendent of Archdiocesan Elections, Yiannis Harilaou, stated that the participation rate up to 5:45 pm (the polls closed at 6:00 pm) was 30.2% of registered voters.
