The aim of the action was to highlight the importance of giving, authentic interaction and the valueless relationship between people
In an open, historic space, such as that of the ancient market of Philippi, completely identified with social life, the center of commercial activity, but also a place where important events of the time took place, students from primary schools of Kavala participated in an action implemented by the Center of Education for the Environment and Sustainability (KEPEA) Philippi.
The aim of the action was to highlight the importance of giving, authentic interaction and the valueless relationship between people. In fact, as pointed out in her statement by the head of KEPA Philippi Dr. Eleni Antonara “at a time when social cohesion is being tested and the need for contact, communication, development of social networks is great, the cultivation of cashless exchange is considered very important”.
As part of the action, students toured the market place of the ancient city of Philippi and revived the ancient commercial street by setting up shops and stalls, not to sell, but to give away their favorite books.
Also, close to the area where according to the excavations the library was located, on the eastern side of the ancient market of Philippi, reading workshops were implemented with the title “Walking walking in the ancient market, book book are you here?” with activities inspired and based on the books of Antonis Papatheodoulou “Amalia”, and Antonis Papatheodoulou and Dikaios Hatzipli “Charisti biblioteca”.
The activity offered the children inspiration on how to “promote” their books beautifully and poetically, but also how to give books from their hearts. They created a poster by making a collage of their favorite heroes walking around the ancient market and they called on… goddess fortune, the patroness of the ancient city, to bring them the best possible book, different for everyone, since everyone is unique.
At the end of the action, the children left, taking with them new paper friends and heroes, such as Amalia and Sophocles, while the book they… chose will accompany experiences, knowledge, feelings from a fantastic journey to another era, from a otherworldly bazaar for children.
The program was implemented with the cooperation of the Regional Center for Educational Planning of the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (PEKS AMTH) and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kavala – Thassos, with the theme “replacement – free book bazaar in the ancient market”.
The 9th and 11th primary schools of Drama, the primary school of Paleo Kavala, the primary school of Philippi, the primary school of Amygdaleona, the primary school of Melissokomeio of the municipality of Pangaios and the 24th primary school of Kavala participated in the action that was implemented at the beginning and end of December.
