UK: Nurses and ambulance workers plan new strikes in 2023

Ambulance service workers represented by the GMB union have set January 11 as the new date for strike action

The healthcare workers of Britain announced today new round of strikes in January, as their long dispute with the government over wages and working conditions is expected to continue into 2023.

The new strike dates will put more pressure on Britain’s National Health Service (NHS), which is already under pressure from staff shortages and high patient backlogs.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak he told reporters that he was disappointed with the turmoil caused by the strikes, adding that he was trying to “make the right long-term decisions for the country, for the good of everyone.”

Nursing staff union the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has announced that thousands of its members will strike again on January 18 and 19 over pay following two days of action in December.

“I do not wish to prolong this controversy but the prime minister left us no choiceRCN general secretary Pat Cullen said today.

The New Year is also expected to see strike dates for members of Scotland’s nurses’ union, as this week they came out in support of rejecting the Scottish Government’s pay offer.

Ambulance service workers represented by the GMB union they set January 11 as a new date for demonstrations after suspending their planned strike later this month.

“People all over the country are great and have supported us and we care so much for them. It is for this reason that we are suspending the GMB’s proposed strike action for 28 December,” said GMB general secretary Rachel Harrison.
