The former mayor of Mytilini Spyros Galinos has died

Spyros Galinos was the son of the hero of the National Resistance and for a number of years a deputy of the prefecture of Lesvos Mimi Galinos.

Spyros Galinos, the mayor of Lesvos in the period 2014-2019, died today at the age of 70, in the Mytilini hospital where he had been hospitalized for the last few days after a long battle with cancer.

Spyros Galinos was born in Athens in March 1952 and grew up in Mytilini. He developed a rich sporting activity as a swimmer and as a polo player in the Navy Club of Mytilene (NOM).

In 1990, 1994 and 1998 he was elected municipal councilor of Mytilini.

In 2002 he was elected prefectural councilor assuming the duties of vice-prefect of Lesvos.

In 2009, he was elected Member of Parliament for Lesvos, Limnos and Ai-Stratis, with the New Democracy party.

In June 2013 he was elected secretary general of the Independent Greeks. As part of his candidacy for the mayorship of the Municipality of Lesvos, he resigned from the position he held. In May 2014 he was elected mayor of Lesvos.

He was married to Eleni Galetaki with whom they had two sons.
