15,200 m2 of streets and busy areas of the historic shopping center have already been restored
A large spray wall cleaning operation is underway in central Athens
The crews of the cleaning department of the Municipality of Athens are “sweeping” the historic shopping streets of the city, already restoring over 15,200 square meters of surfaces.
Dozens of buildings in the historic center, including many of recognized historical and architectural value, which until yesterday were covered by unruly smudges and paints are coming to light again. They regain, after decades, their lost glory, becoming a living part of the architectural wealth of Athens again.
Athena, Euripides, Sophocles, Aristidou, Aeolus, Kolokotronis, Praxitelus, Lekka, Athenaides, Agia Irini, Polykleitos, Agios Markos, Chrysospiliotissis, Vlachava, Vyssis, Miltiadou, Nikiou, Karori, Avramiotou, Boreu, Kairis. They are just some of the popular streets of the capital, in which the specialized anti-graffiti team of the Municipality of Athens has already acted, changing their image to a great extent.
“Athens was left for many decades at the mercy of the smudge. Picturesque corners of the city, shop fronts, surfaces of historic buildings were “watered” with paint and covered by dozens of unsightly graffiti. So, we had to highlight the light of Athens, putting an end to the misery and the “blackness” that “covered” it. Our work is not done. The big anti-graffiti operations continue and we are slowly seeing the real, shining Athens behind the smear”, emphasized the Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis.
The employees of the Cleaning Department gave emphasis on walls, marble, metal and stone surfaces, while after consultation with the shopkeepers the action was extended to shop shutters, which were covered with unsightly designs for many years. In fact, to date, 402 businesses have responded positively to the restoration program, while a total of 1250 rolls have already been restored.
To date, more than 2,000 liters of solvent have been used to remove years of unruly graffiti, as well as over 55 tons of water for general cleaning, while specialist crews used 1,100 liters of special liquid to protect the surfaces from future vandalism.
“The most important thing is that anti-graffiti operations have become a daily routine for Athens. It is no longer about piecemeal interventions, but an organic part of our strategy that aims to improve the quality of life of Athenians”, says Deputy Mayor for Cleanliness and Recycling Nikos Avramidis.
