This year the UK has experienced several record-breaking heat waves according to Britain’s Met Office.
2022 is the hottest year on record for the UK, which experienced several record-breaking heat waves this summer, Britain’s Met Office said today.
“2022 will be the UK’s warmest year on record. While many remember the extreme heat of the summer, what has been remarkable this year is the relatively constant heat throughout the year,” said Mark McCarthy of the Met Office.
The average temperature for the year will be known in January but will be higher than the previous record set in 2014 (9.88 degrees Celsius), according to provisionally available data.
Each of the four seasons this year is one of the ten warmest ever recorded since national records were set in 1884, the Met Office said, based on its provisional figures which will be made official once the year is over.
Besides, the ten warmest years have been recorded since 2003, the announcement underlines.
“The warm year is consistent with the actual impacts we expect from human-caused climate change,” McCarthy added.
2022 had started with record temperatures on January 1, with over 16 degrees recorded in London.
Every month of the year – with the exception of December – recorded average temperatures above normal for the season, it added.
In July, temperatures topped 40C for the first time in the UK, the driest month on record in many parts of southern and eastern England, forcing authorities to implement water restrictions in places.
As well as the record temperatures, the Met Office notes that the year has been particularly dry, with rainfall well below average.
The proliferation of heat waves is a direct consequence of global warming according to scientists, with greenhouse gas emissions increasing in intensity, duration and frequency.
In France, the year ending will also remain the warmest year on record, Météo-France reported in late November.
