Lekkas for earthquake in Evia: Everything is going well

by

The president of the OASP, Professor of Geology Efthymios Lekkas, is reassuring – The five reasons that led to the convening of the committee

The assessment that “everything is going well and there is no cause for concern” from today’s 4.9 Richter earthquake in Psachna was the conclusion of the seismic risk assessment committee that met in the early afternoon at the request of the Ministry of Civil Protection, as the president told APE-MPE of the committee and the OSCE, Professor Efthymios Lekkas.

“Everything is progressing smoothly, the committee assessed,” added Mr. Lekkas while noting that the committee did not conclude whether it was the main earthquake, adding characteristically that “nature will decide on that.”

He further stated that the committee decided to “dust off a bit” the preparedness plans for the specific area.

The convening of the seismic risk assessment committee was requested immediately after the earthquake in Psachna by the research director of the Geodynamic Institute Gerasimos Papadopoulos. Speaking to APE-MPE, Mr. Papadopoulos emphasized that there are five reasons why a committee should be convened:

1. the wider area of Evia has been stimulated lately and apart from the earthquakes in southern Evia now we also have earthquakes in the central Evia region which is near Attica

2. the epicenter of today’s earthquake is very close to the urban center of the city of Chalkida

3. and some time ago there had been a discussion in the committee about the city of Chalkida in relation to other earthquakes

4. the Psachni fault had been activated again in 2003 and had produced a 5.05 Richter earthquake, and

5. the earthquake was particularly felt in Athens and for this reason a committee should be convened to make an assessment as to whether it was the main earthquake and issue its conclusions.
