Papadopoulos in SKAI about the earthquake in Psachna: The aftershocks so far are not enough – We do not know the dimensions of the fault

According to the professor until now we cannot say that the earthquake was the main one – “Caution and patience is needed” he pointed out

Professor Gerasimos Papadopoulos mentioned the activation of a new outbreak, different from the outbreaks that have been activated for a month in South Evia, while pointing out that at the moment it is not possible to clarify whether the 4.9 Richter was the main earthquake.

“When it was activated in South Evia, we said it was an unknown outbreak, here is a new outbreak but from an outbreak that we have already known,” said the professor speaking to the SKAI main news bulletin.

At the same time, he did not rule out the possibility of a stronger earthquake as, as he said, the dimensions of the specific fault are not known.

“It could potentially produce a stronger earthquake, we know that the focus was activated in 2003, but we do not know exactly the dimensions of the specific fault and the dimensions are a critical parameter because the larger the fault, the larger and the maximum size that can occur.”

“Until this moment we cannot say that the earthquake was the main one. We don’t know, we don’t have sufficient scientific evidence. Usually in two, three, four days we have gathered all those elements, the records and the instruments which are necessary to have a valid and thorough opinion”, emphasized Mr. Papadopoulos.

Asked if the number of aftershocks is sufficient, as there have been 36 so far with the largest at 3.5 Richter, the professor pointed out that the number is not sufficient.

“It requires attention and patience. Better not to say he was the master, than to say he was the master and then be disproven for many reasons,” he concluded.
