“We came to practically support the mayor, who is a representative of democracy. The importance of the case is great”, said the mayor of Athens
The mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, expressed his undivided support and sympathy for the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglou, today, in the context of the discussion on the topic: “Cities: Democracy and Development”, which took place in the afternoon at the city hall of Istanbul. The debate was attended by mayors of European cities, who also expressed their support and solidarity to Mr. Imamoglou.
Mr. Bakoyiannis called his Turkish counterpart a “friend” throughout his speech, and emphasized: “We came to practically support the mayor, who is a representative of democracy. The importance of the case is great. It is not a temporary source of grief and resentment. It has serious consequences for Turkey’s European perspective. To put it simply, if today the mayor is censored, then what tomorrow dawns for Turkey for the citizens of this country? If the rule of law does not prevail? The democracy that Ekrem supports is not a luxury. It is a necessity for development and a condition for a better life. The political neutralization of Ekrem does not benefit anyone, on the contrary it has a negative effect. Our stance will be clear and our support absolute. We stand with democracy and the right side of History. I have faith in Ekrem’s political strength”, Kostas Bakoyannis pointed out.
For his part, the mayor of Constantinople underlined that “a government that has lost its sense of justice loses its reason for existence”.
“In my person, the legislative coup attempt against the will of the people of Istanbul, who have not lost their sense of justice, saddens me. I thank all the mayors who acted in solidarity with me and the people of Istanbul in the context of this meeting, which he is not interested in who commits illegality against whom, but only focuses on whether what is being done is fair, democratic, or not. I honestly believe that democracy will win very quickly in Europe, in Turkey and in Istanbul,” stressed Mr. Imamoglou.
