The results of the laboratory tests of the National Network of Sewage Epidemiology for the epidemiological surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in urban wastewater, which operates under the coordination of EODY, are announced.
The samples come from the Attica Region and the cities of Thessaloniki, Larissa, Volos, Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, Agios Nikolaos Lassithi, Patras, Xanthi, Alexandroupolis, Ioannina and Corfu. The samples are taken from the entrances of the local Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWUs) and correspond to the population served by them.
Conclusions: During the week 13 to 19 December 2021, there were declining trends, compared to the week 6 to 12 December 2021, in the average weekly viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in the urban wastewater of seven of the thirteen (7/13) areas tested from the National Network of Sewage Epidemiology (EDEL) of EODY, increasing trends in four of the thirteen (4/13) areas of EDEL and stabilizing trends in two of the thirteen (2/13) areas of EDEL.
Net reduction of viral load in urban wastewater was observed in Xanthi (-30%), Rethymno (-37%), Ioannina (-39%), Larissa (-40%), Alexandroupolis (-42%) and Volos (-47%), while the reduction observed in Thessaloniki was marginal (-22%).
Clearly increasing trends were observed in the viral load of urban wastewater in Agios Nikolaos (+ 54%), Patras (+ 57%), Chania (+ 103%) and Corfu (+ 241%). The viral load of urban wastewater in the Attica Region (+ 9%) and Heraklion (+ 12%) remained virtually stable.
