In total, eight earthquakes were recorded by the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens in less than 24 hours
The earth has been shaking for the last few days in Crete, again, this time north of Neapolis Lasithi as a result of which the reflection is intense both among scientists and among citizens who anxiously follow the developments.
In totaleight earthquakes were recorded by the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens in less than 24 hours according to the president of OASP and professor of Seismology Efthymis Lekkas. He points out that these are earthquakes that fortunately are recorded in the maritime area
For his part, the Doctor of Seismology and member of the Board of Management at the Hellenic Mediterranean University (ELMEPA) Gerasimos Papadopoulos calls for the need for vigilance, telling Cretalive that “In recent days, seismic activity has been developing in the sea area north of Neapolis Lasithi. The magnitudes are not particularly large . They have reached about 4.3 Richter. This means that we have not exceeded the danger threshold. However, continuous monitoring is needed because the seismic activity persists for several days.”
Also, Mr. Papadopoulos particularly emphasizes that “the phenomenon is monitored by scientists who record all seismic vibrations and evaluate the course of the phenomenon. For now, no, we are not worried because we have not crossed any danger line, however, it needs monitoring and evaluation,” he added.
In his post at noon on Tuesday, Mr. Papadopoulos specifically points out:
“Neapolis Lassithiou, Enceladus…waits!
Intense seismic activity in the maritime area north of Naples with many earthquakes from 28.12.2022. Sizes are relatively small, up to 4.4. Persistent seismic activity requires an equally persistent and continuous evaluation of the phenomenon.”
