The role of electronic systems in road behavior

by

The new electronic systems that equip modern cars contribute to achieving high percentages in the field of road behavior.

During the development of the new generation Kia Sportage, engineers conducted tests on various European roads to improve the adjustment of the vehicle’s steering and suspension system and to adjust the electronic driving assistance systems.

The Motor Driven Power Steering System (MDPS) provides immediate steering response, the brand says. The suspension, which is based on a MacPherson strut system at the front and a four-link arrangement at the rear, has been adjusted to enhance the feel while driving.

It also launches a range of technologies for optimum accuracy and control in all weather conditions and on a variety of surfaces.

An optional Electronic Suspension System (ECS) provides comfort and higher levels of safety thanks to continuous damping control, reacting quickly to body and steering movements.

The brand new Terrain Mode is applied for the first time in Sportage and is available in AWD Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid versions. It is an advanced system that automatically adjusts the settings for maximum traction in difficult conditions, including snow, mud and sand.

Sportage starts in Drive mode. The driver can then choose one of the Comfort, Eco or Sport modes to better adapt the driving experience to his needs. Eco mode is designed to achieve optimum fuel efficiency. When the driver selects Sport mode, steering response and acceleration are enhanced to provide a dynamic driving experience. For convenience and extra security, all driving functions are displayed on the high-resolution digital display with graphics, according to the selected function.

An electronically controlled AWD system ensures that power is optimally distributed between the front and rear wheels depending on road and driving conditions, not only improving driving performance but also enhancing safety and performance. The AWD Lock function, available on the ICE and Mild Hybrid models, can lock all four wheels for better traction in the snow or off-road.

The high-tech E-Handling system further enhances dynamic performance and cornering stability. Available in Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid versions with conventional shock absorbers, the system uses E-Motor torque indicators to improve steering response, traction on front-wheel drive (FWD) models and emergency stability.
