The mother of the 6-year-old, who was in contact with the doctors until the last moment, is shocked
At 1:30 in the morning, the process began to take the organs of 6-year-old Thomas from Grevena, who suffered a cardiac arrest and was fighting for his life in the Children’s Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Patras.
According to the ERT report, the kidneys and corneas will be transplanted to recipients in Greece, while the heart, lungs and liver were offered in Italy.
The 6-year-old’s mother is shocked: To keep beating Thomas’s heart
In fact, the mother was in communication with the doctors until the last moment, hoping that everything would go well? “May Thomas’s heart continue to beat and fulfill the dreams of both Thomas and the child who will receive it” said the mother of the 6-year-old, who was in communication with the doctors until the last moment and wished him success.
Particularly moving was the moment at the University Hospital of Patras when shortly before the doctors proceeded to remove the organs, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the deceased child.
According to the website tempo24.news, the heart is being received by a six-year-old girl in Turin, who was living with mechanical support. The removal of the organ has been completed and it is being transported by vehicle to Araxos where a plane is waiting to take it to Italy. The surgery continues for the remaining grafts.
The lungs will give breathing power to an 11-year-old in Bergamo, part of the liver will go to a five-month-old infant, while recipients in Greece will be given the kidneys and corneas.
According to information, the heart of little Thomas will be given to a 6-year-old girl in Turin who was living with mechanical support, the lungs of the boy from Grevena to an 11-year-old boy in Bergamo and a part of his liver to an infant of only 5 months with the other part going to a patient in Rome.
For the long-hour operation set up by the airport master of Araxos George Gouvitsas congratulated the staff, saying in a post on social media:
“With mixed feelings, I have to congratulate all the workers of the night shift, who faithfully kept the airport of Araxos open from 21.00 and throughout the night, in order to serve the flights of the two planes that came from Italy to take the heart, lungs and liver of the little boy, just 6 years old from Grevena. Warm congratulations for the greatness of soul shown by the parents of the small child, who when they were informed and despite the superhuman efforts of the ICU doctors of the Rio hospital, that their child is brain dead, they donated the organs, in order to save other children in Greece and in Italy !!!”
