“We protect the historical building of Patisia with care – Its rescue is a debt to the history of the city” said K. Bakoyannis

The way is now open for the complete restoration of the emblematic “Villa Klonaridis” in the FIX – Klonaridis park in Patisia, after the necessary support and restoration work has been completed by the technical services of the Municipality of Athens.

The building for years presented an image of complete abandonment. This situation was aggravated by the fire that broke out two and a half years ago, completely destroying the wooden and metal infrastructure of the building, resulting in its classification as statically and structurally dangerous.

For the support and protection of the Villa, the Municipality of Athens prepared a study in accordance with the applicable specifications and in full consultation with the Ministry of Culture, as the building has been declared by the YPPO as a New Monument.

During the restoration work, the walls of the building were checked and the loose parts were carefully removed. The interior was cleaned of what the fire had left behind, while special scaffolding was placed around the perimeter of the building which contributed to its resistance.

A large canopy has been placed over the Villa, which protects its interior from the harsh weather conditions. Finally, for security reasons, the area around the building is fenced off.

The next step is now to draw up a restoration study for the Villa, in order for this beautiful Athenian mansion, which has been identified with the history of the capital for the last 120 years, to be utilized for cultural use, hosting events and exhibitions, open to the Athenian public.

In his statement, the Mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyannis, emphasized: “Vila Klonaridis is a building-symbol for Athens and its preservation is a debt to the history of the city, but also to future generations. Having completed the emergency interventions to shield and restore it, we can now take the next important step. We want this gem of the city to gain life again, to open its doors to Athenians and Athenians as a great place of culture, as a living space, integrated, physically and functionally, in the great FIX park that we completely reformed, upgrading the neighborhood of the Patisians”.

The story of the two-story mansion

Villa Klonaridis was inhabited until the end of the 90s. The two-story building, which is said to be the work of the Bavarian architect Ernst Ziller, was bought together with the surrounding lands at the beginning of the 20th century by the Klonaridis brothers, at a time when the area of Patisia was still sparsely populated. The mansion had rich interior and exterior decoration, crafted by important painters of the period.

In 1903, the Klonaridis brothers’ ice-making and brewing factory was built next to the Villa. In the 1930s the factory was bought by Charles Fix, who converted the use of the factory into a warehouse and ice factory. The factory building was demolished in 2000.

In 1993, the Ministry of Culture granted Villa Klonaridis to the Municipality of Athens, and a year later, the Ministry declared it a historical monument, a typical example of a suburban mansion from the beginning of the last century.

In May 2020, a fire broke out, which caused extensive damage to the red mansion in the neighborhood of Patisia.
