Lula chose Belém to host the COP30 in Brazil, says Helder Barbalho

by

The governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, said this Wednesday (11) that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) chose Belém as the host city for COP30, the UN conference (United Nations) on climate change.

Brazil has already applied to the United Nations for the country to host the event, which will take place in 2025. Helder was re-elected to the state government in October and is also president of the Consortium of Governors of the Amazon.

“The president has just announced that Belém is the city chosen by Brazil and has already forwarded, through Itamaraty, the formalization that Brazil reinforces its candidacy”, he told journalists, at the Planalto Palace.

“Belém is the city chosen to host the COP30, in 2025, certainly representing a historic moment in which the Amazon will be hosting the biggest event in climate discussion in the world”, he added.

Helder had a meeting with the petista at Planalto this Wednesday morning. This was a demand from the governor, who made the official request to Chancellor Mauro Vieira the day before, with the mayor of Belém, Edmilson Rodrigues (PSOL), as shown by the Panel.

Holding the climate meeting in the Amazon was a promise made by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) during the transition, when he participated in the edition of the event held in Egypt last year.

At the time, he said he would speak with the UN secretary general to ask that the event take place in Brazil.

“I am here to tell you that Brazil is back in the world. Brazil is coming out of the cocoon to which it has been subjected over the last four years. Brazil was not born to be an isolated country,” said the PT official. era.

This morning, Helder was asked about the possibility of increasing the staff of Ibama and ICMBIO, a demand for careers that are short of employees, Helder said that it is essential to structure the inspection bodies, without going into detail about possible new tenders.

“We are all in tune that it is essential to combat environmental illegalities and, for this, it is essential that the inspection bodies are structured, whether those at the federal level, particularly Ibama and ICMBIO, the call, if necessary, of the Armed Forces, to act in field activities, as well as the states need to advance more and more by structuring their supervision in their jurisdictions”, he said.

Regarding new GLOs (Guarantee of Law and Order) in the region, as the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) did, Helder also said, this morning, to defend any and all initiatives to increase inspection, but said that the instrument of sending military personnel for this is not under study.

He also said that he was in line with the president to build a cross-sectional group to discuss the Amazon development model, “which involves actively and strongly confronting the fight against environmental illegalities, but on the other hand builds the new cross-sectional model of economic development”.
