Speaking to the BBC, Michelle Donelan stressed that there is no intention to permanently return the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece
British Culture Secretary Michelle Donnellan insisted the Parthenon Sculptures “belong here in the UK” and should not be returned to Greece when asked to comment on Greek and foreign media reports that negotiations between Athens and London are progressing.
Some reports have suggested that the chairman of the British Museum and former Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, is close to reaching a deal with Greece.
However, the minister emphasized today on BBC Radio 4’s The Media Show that the permanent return of the Sculptors “is not Osborne’s intention”.
In her interview – where she was placed on a series of other issues – Donelan stressed that sending the Sculptors to Greece would “open Pandora’s Box” and would be a “dangerous road to walk”.
In particular, a discussion on the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece would cause a confrontation for the rest of the British Museum’s exhibits as well, explained Britain’s Minister of Culture.
The BBC reports, among other things, that Michelle Donnellan’s claims about the “correct” law that prohibits the British Museum from returning the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece will cause “the wrath of Athens and beyond”.
For her part, however, the British culture minister pointed out that she had “many conversations” with the director of the British Museum, George Osborne, and that “his view on this issue has been misconstrued and certainly misrepresented. He’s not going to send back the Parthenon Sculptures.”
“He’s not going to send them back [σ.σ.: τα Γλυπτά]. That is not his intention. He has no desire to do so. The idea of a 100-year loan has also been discussed, which is certainly not what he plans. He would agree with me that we shouldn’t be sending them back and in fact they belong here in the UK where we have been looking after them for a long time since we gained access,” said Britain’s Culture Secretary Michelle Donnellan.
