The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, in the Northeast, and the city of Manaus, in the North, are the two Brazilian destinations that appear on The New York Times’ list of the 52 best places to visit in 2023. The list is headed by London.

The American newspaper describes Lençóis, which appears in the 11th position, as “the antidote against the claustrophobic feeling of the Covid era – a vast lunar passage where one can roam freely”. He also says that those who visit the place feel “vaguely on planet Earth” among its impeccably white sand dunes and blue lagoons filled with rainwater.

The publication reports that there is no cell phone signal in the northeastern park or any sign of comfort. “There are only a few structures, people or even trees around. And its proximity to the equator means it is scorching hot during the day.”

When it talks about the capital of Amazonas, which ranks 41st, the New York Times spills over its cuisine. “São Paulo’s starred restaurants use Amazonian ingredients to appear exotic, but in Manais you can taste steaming gourds of tacacá from stalls in front of the Teatro Amazonas.”

The New York newspaper also gives some tips for tourists who decide to travel to the Amazonian city: the Biatuwi restaurant, with indigenous cuisine, as well as Banzeiro and Moquém do Banzeiro, by chef Felipe Schaedler.

The New York Times list brings, just after London in first place, the following destinations in its ranking: Morioka (Japan), Monument Valley (USA), Kilmartin Glen (Scotland), Auckland (New Zealand), Palm Springs (USA) ), Kangaroo Island (Australia), Vjosa River Valley (Albania), Accra (Ghana) and Tromso (Norway).

There are no other Brazilian destinations on the list besides Lençóis Maranhenses and Manaus.
