Landslides and problems in Zakynthos

The new bad weather that has been “hitting” since yesterday, in the southern Ionian, caused serious problems in Zakynthos. From midday, flooding began to occur in various parts of the island, specifically in Lagana, Kalamaki and Agios Dimitris.

In Argasi, Zakynthos, the fire brigade freed and transported to a safe place a man from a car that had stopped due to high water levels on the road.

The fire brigade received 20 calls for help, three water pumps were made from houses and 12 people were taken to a safe place.

Vehicular traffic had to be stopped for a few hours, until the interventions deemed necessary by the authorities (P.E. Zakynthos, Technical Services, Department of Civil Protection) were completed for the drainage of the water and the removal of transported materials. Also, a small landslide occurred in Argasi and the road to Vassiliko was closed for a while.

Also, due to the heavy rainfall, a large landslide occurred in E.O. Zakynthos-Keriou, in the area of ​​Laikia.

Message from 112

In fact, at midday 112 was also called in Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Patras and the citizens received a warning message that referred to the occurrence of dangerous weather phenomena and it was recommended to limit movement during the phenomena, while there was also a meeting at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection .

During the night, the mountainous villages of the municipalities of Lamia and Makrakomi were dressed in white.

Warning messages from 112 were received yesterday in the first phase by the residents of the Ionian islands outside of Corfu as well as in Etoloakarnania, Achaia and Ilia.

A message followed to the inhabitants of Corinth, Argolis, Laconia, Messinia, Eastern Arcadia, Karditsa, Trikala and Western Macedonia.

The message speaks of strong storms and gale-force winds, while asking citizens to only make absolutely necessary movements and to follow the instructions of the Authorities.

Schools in Kefallonia and Ithaca will remain closed today (Thursday).

All Civil Protection forces have been put on maximum alert, while a new broad coordination meeting will be held within the day to re-evaluate the course of the bad weather.

The weather forecast

Bad weather is forecast across the country with heavy rain and thunderstorms almost across the country.

Snowfall will occur in the continental highlands and semi-mountains and locally in areas in the north with a relatively lower altitude, which will be dense in places in Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly, western and central Sterea and Thrace.

The southerly winds in the Aegean will gradually strengthen locally to 8 to 9 Beaufort.

The temperature will drop mainly in the central and northern areas.

In the north it will not exceed 5 to 8 degrees, in the central areas it will reach 8 to 12 degrees, in the rest 13 to 15 degrees, while in the southern island country it will be 16 to 18 degrees Celsius.

Frost will be observed in places in the central and northern continental areas in the morning and evening hours.

MACEDONIA, THRACE

Weather: Increased clouds with rain and coastal storms with possible hail in Macedonia, which from noon will spread to Thrace, locally strong from the afternoon in central and eastern Macedonia and from early evening in Thrace. Snowfall will occur in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas but in areas with a relatively lower altitude, which will be dense in places in western Macedonia and central Macedonia and from early evening in eastern Macedonia and Thrace (indicative altitude of 400-500 meters and above ).

Winds: East northeast 4 to 6, from the afternoon in the east local 7 Beaufort while in the kentics will become north northwest.

Winds: East southeast 5 to 7 Beaufort with weakening from noon.

Temperature: From 06 to 14 degrees Celsius. In the interior of Epirus 5 to 6 degrees lower.

THESSALIA, EASTERN CONTINENTA, EASTERN PELOPONNISUS

Weather: Clouds with rain, sporadic storms and on the maritime-coastal local hail. The effects will be strong in places, from the morning hours in the eastern Peloponnese and gradually in the central Sterea and Thessaly with a weakening from the afternoon and from the pre-noon hours in the eastern Sterea, Evia and the Sporades with a weakening in the evening.

Snowfall will occur in the highlands and semi-mountains, which will be dense in places in Thessaly (indicative altitude of 500-600 meters and above) and central Sterea (indicative altitude of 700-800 meters and above).

Winds: East southeast and in the north east northeast 4 to 6 Beaufort. From the afternoon, they will become southerly in the south and north-northwesterly in the north and locally they will strengthen to 7 Beaufort.
