Special court: I did not believe in the Novartis scandal and I had told the prime minister, said Papagelopoulos

The former Deputy Minister of Justice, Dimitris Papagelopoulos, stated that everything attributed to him is fabricated, paranoid and false

On today’s second day of his statement before him Special Court on the responsibility of ministers, the former Deputy Minister of Justice Dimitris Papagelopoulos, stated that everything attributed to him is fabricated, paranoid and false.

At the beginning of his apology, Mr. Papagelopoulos partially reconstructed his yesterday’s apology in terms of the part that referred to what he said about the testimony of the witness former Financial Crimes Prosecutor Panagiotis Athanasiou, stating:

“I didn’t want to say yesterday that Athanasiou was mentally disturbed. Such was his fury to avenge me, because he thought I should see to the renewal of his term. But he also got trade-offs, immunity for the illegal acts he was found to have done.

Don’t forget that Touloupaki is on trial because she kept the case file of Panagiotis Kouroumplis in the office for a few days and Mr. Athanasiou kept a case file for 4 years, with 4 ND ministers.

He foolishly believed that his term could be renewed. But there was no way his term would be renewed, even if God said so.

So he was also recruited Mrs. Eleni Raikou by my political persecutors, to present the Novartis scandal as my fault. But the five judges of the Supreme Court (s.s.: judges of the judicial council of the Special Court) ruled that it was not a scam. Because otherwise I’d have to have my gang partner and the FBI.”

Then, when asked by the president of the Special Court, Vasiliki Iliopoulou, why would Mr. Athanasiou tell all these lies (as the accused has claimed), Mr. Papagelopoulos replied that they were pointed out to him and fabricated, as he was promised immunity for all that he has done and added that Mr. Athanasiou harbors hatred against him, has elements of vindictiveness against him and his lies are continuous.

In fact, Mr. Papagelopoulos asked the rhetorical question: “Let’s see if New Democracy is re-elected, what position Mr. Athanasiou will occupy.”

Regarding the testimony of the former head of the Corruption Prosecution Eleni Raikou (who was succeeded by Eleni Touloupaki), Mr. Papagelopoulos said that she is a liar, her statements are false, her claims are crazy and everything “is a figment of her imagination”, while at the same time he tried to hide the close family relations they had between them. In addition to their joint expenses in taverns, etc., she herself visited him at the Ministry of Justice very often, two or three times a week, the accused said.

Furthermore, Mr. Papagelopoulos argued that Mrs. Raikou wanted to favor the former Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras. According to the defendant, “Mr. Samaras asked me for a favor, I knew he was doing bribes and I put them in touch.”

Afterwards, Mr. Papagelopoulos noticed that Ms. Raikou repeated what Mr. Samaras claimed in his lawsuit. (It is recalled that Mr. Samaras had filed a lawsuit regarding her case Novartisagainst Alexis Tsipras, Mr. Papagelopoulos, Eleni Touloupakis, protected witnesses, etc.).

Furthermore, Mr. Papagelopoulos refuted the testimony of the Appellants’ prosecutor, Georgia Tsatani, as false. According to the accused, in a meeting he had with Mrs. Tsatani at the Ministry of Justice, the latter told him that she had good relations with Konstantinos Mitsotakis and that her husband had party relations with the ND. According to the former Deputy Minister of Justice, Ms. Tsatsani is possessed by irrationality and everything she said is false and fabricated – and she herself was part of the gang that tried to cover up scandals.

Finally, Mr. Papagelopoulos made reference to the Novartis case, saying characteristically:

“I didn’t believe in the Novartis scandal. This case is a very big scandal, but I didn’t think it would work, because foreigners want to hold hostage those who have bribed. I believed that this case had nothing to offer and I had even told the prime minister.”

The apology of Mr. Papagelopoulos continues the day after tomorrow, Thursday, February 2, 2023.
