Considerations for limiting vehicle traffic in Menorca to protect the environment

These measures were taken 30 years after the island was declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco.

The island of Menorca, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain, can henceforth restrict the entry and traffic of vehicles to protect its environment, the regional parliament of the Balearic Islands decided today.

The Mediterranean archipelago’s parliament adopted a law allowing the island’s government to impose “the restriction of the entry into Menorca of any type of motor vehicle” as well as a “maximum number of vehicles that can circulate on the island during a specified period”, according to the text of the law.

This law also allows the Island Authority to limit the number of rental vehicles that can enter the island for commercial purposes, and also allows regulation of marine activities as well as beach services and facilities.

These measures were taken 30 years after the island was declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco.

Menorca is one of the three major Balearic Islands, along with Mallorca and ‘Ibitha, and is famous for its idyllic natural landscapes.

The island of 100,000 inhabitants received almost 160,000 tourists in August 2022, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics.
