“Patrinal carnival forever”: Out court of the lyricist of the “anthem” in the municipality of Patras

The creator of the “anthem” of the Patronus Carnival, Tasos Maragos, explains his decision for the out-of-court hearing in the municipality

Tasos Maragos sent an injunction to KEDIP – Patrino Carnival, prohibiting the use and transmission of the song “Patrino Carnival forever” and all his other carnival compositions.

This means that the undisputed “anthem” of the Patreon Carnival, as well as all the other world-loved songs of the paternal creator, will not be able to be heard at any event of the Municipality of Patreon, nor of course at the institution’s parades!

As revealed today by the “Peloponnisos” newspaper, the acclaimed native music composer took this measure as a last resort in order to defend not only his intellectual work, but also his artistic status, after finding repeated violations on the part of the Carnival Organization.

The three points of confrontation

According to information available to “P”, first point of contention between KEDIP – Carnival of Patras and Tasos Maragos, it was the unauthorized production and recording by him, in March 2021 by the Carnival Organization, of a CD that arbitrarily included the song “Patrino Carnival forever”. The composer and lyricist himself was not asked about the re-performance of his song, which was recorded without his permission, with a relevant decision of KEDIP.

Second point confrontation was, when in 2022, the Carnival Organization used again, without the legal permission of the creator, lyrics of the song “Patrino Carnival for ever”, which it printed on bags, t-shirts, mugs, key rings, masks, badges, caskets, pennants, candles, coasters and other souvenirs.

All these products were sold from the carnival stand of the Municipality of Patreon, which is located at pl. Three Allies, with the verses of his song printed on them, such as “come to learn what Patrinos will say”, “Patrino Carnival forever” and “come live for a while crazy”.

In fact, Tasos Maragos himself was surprised when he saw souvenirs bearing his verses being sold at the Municipality stand and he even bought some of these products, such as one of the mugs, which were valued at 12 euros each!

Third point confrontation it is the practice of the Municipality of Patreon not to receive music reproduction licenses from the competent collective copyright management bodies, such as “Automation” and others.

As mentioned by Tasos Maragos, KEDIP – Patras Carnival, not only illegally exploits his works and intellectual property, which it markets without his permission, but also turns a deaf ear and does not obtain the legal reproduction licenses, ignoring and devaluing the creator’s contribution to cultural events of the city, for 33 years.

“I allow private individuals my songs”

Tasos Maragos clarified to “P” that the ban on his songs only concerns all the events and actions of the Municipality of Patras and not the catering, recreation and entertainment businesses of Patras and private individuals, who can freely use and broadcast the songs of.
We should also note that from 1990 to the present, Tasos Maragos has not raised any claim – apart from the legal ones – from the Municipality of Patreon, for the exploitation of his work, considering that in this way he offers to his beloved city and to Patrino Carnival, which anyway, has helped so much in the field of extroversion and advertising.
