A modular narrative, which composes tragic and comic elements, was created, through his photographic lens, by the third year Film Student of AUTh Vassilis Pantelidis, winning with his images the International Jury at the 8th World Biennial of Student Photography, Monologues (2021) “for the 1st prize of the competition.
“I’m trying to tell a story. Time, identity, body, memory, symbolism, stereotypes, all these are in the photos. “I am definitely interested in storytelling,” Vassilis Pantelidis, who took first place among 170 students from around the world at the World Biennale, organized by the Academy of Arts of the University of Novi Sad, told APE-MPE.
The photographic work, according to its creator, consists of a series of conceptual self-portraits, diverse episodes that detect the human condition, the result of a ferment between the tragic and the comic of life.
“I see both the comic and the tragic element, these are my references and I start to say something, because I believe that more or less, the concepts of comic-tragic coexist in life”, added Mr. Pantelidis, explaining that “I am more interested what the public sees, I do not try to impose a specific meaning “.
The first image of the series “Monologues”, which is evolving with the addition of new works, was created in 2018 and the most recent in 2021. The student was congratulated for the international distinction by the Rector of AUTh Prof. Nikos Papaioannou, noting that the award “reflects the high level of studies performed at the Aristotle University and enables students to occupy high positions in international competitions and to continue, with all the supplies they receive from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, to claim their dreams.”
Undergraduate and postgraduate students of University Departments and Colleges participate in the World Biennial of Student Photography, which includes the subject of photography in their curriculum. Students participate in the Competition with original projects, which are created in the context of their studies.
