Bad weather “Barbara”: Snowing in Volos and Pelion – Prohibition of sailing for Sporades

Heavy snowfall has hit Pelion and eastern Magnesia since the morning, while in the next few hours, according to EMY forecasts, it is expected to affect the Sporades as well.

At 9:30 in the morning, heavy snow began to fall in the city of Volos and the wider area of ​​the capital of Magnesia, while the apparatus of the Region and the municipality have begun clearing roads in Pelion and the northern suburbs of the city.

Since the night, due to the heavy snowfall in Pelion, dozens of machines have been removing snow and pouring salt on the road Volos-Chania-Zagoras, but also on other parts of the road network of Pelion where there is a problem, so that the roads remain open.

In Pelion the snowfall intensified from 7 in the morning, where strong winds are also blowing and especially in Chania the snow has reached 10 centimeters with the thermometer showing -9 degrees.

The heavy snow falling even on Volos beach has limited visibility and traffic is minimal. The temperature in the center of Volos is only 2 degrees and strong winds are blowing in the area.

The municipality of Volos has put out water tankers on the streets that are supplied with sea water from the port and pour it on the main streets and the Peripheral so that the road surface does not freeze.

At the same time, the Central Port Authority of Volos prohibited the departure of ships from the port of Volos to the Sporades, due to the strong winds that blow in the sea area outside Pagasitikos and reach 8 Beaufort. Heavy snowfall is also expected on the islands of the Sporades from midday.
