The clearings and the fire works of the forests are proceeding immediately. The Ministry of Environment and Energy, in cooperation with the HRDH, submitted a request for funding to the Recovery Fund, amounting to 50 million euros for the “Forest Protection Program”. The project includes studies and cleaning actions for fire protection.
The technical specifications were signed by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, George Amyras, the Secretary General of Natural Environment and Waters, Konstantinos Arabosis and the General Director of Forests and Forest Environment, Vangtus and the Mandated
HRDH Advisor, Panagiotis Stampoulidis and will be submitted for approval to the Recovery Fund.
The main goal of the program is to immediately implement fire protection actions in high risk areas which have been indicated by the General Directorate of Forests and Forest Environment of RIS. Their purpose is to shield the country’s forest ecosystems from possible fires in the future.
Priority will be given to actions such as:
• clearing of forest areas
• forest road network maintenance / improvements
• creation of fire zones
These areas include Penteli, forest areas in Kapandriti, Aegina, Trizinia and Methana Poros, Salamina and other areas of Piraeus, Megara, the mountains Pagontas and Dirfis in Chalkida, the suburban forest of Thessaloniki, Strofilia, Samos, Skopelos, Ikaria, Ainos in Cephalonia etc.
The project also includes the elaboration of studies and implementation of works for clearing forests and forest areas and maintenance of forest road network and fire zones, in areas where there are no approved corresponding studies such as Rhodes, Heraklion, Crete, Olympia archeological site and Olympis forest. , in Lavrio, Corinth and Xylokastro, on Mount Parnitha and Chios.
Studies are also planned for the preparation of Fire Protection Plans in accordance with the recently updated technical specifications. These studies will be under the responsibility of the Forest Service, in areas that are considered vulnerable to fires.
During the maturation of the project and at whatever stage it is possible, the biomass will be collected and utilized in an environmentally and socially sustainable way, while the possibilities of encouraging the participation of the Forest Labor Cooperatives in the cleaning of the forest areas will be explored.
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, stated: “With the” Forest Protection Program “we provide by shielding our forests from the risk of future catastrophic fires. We are redesigning the prevention policy and formulating a new national forest strategy for the coming decades. It is our duty to protect our natural heritage from the great challenges of the climate crisis and to pass it on to future generations. The Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, George Amyras, stated: “In cooperation with the HRDH, which provides us with fast implementation times, and with the financial support of the Recovery Fund we put into practice the prevention of forest fires, we enter the forests and forest areas that are judged vulnerable and we clean them, maintain forest roads and fire zones. “Prevention is the key and that is why we work closely with the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.”
