TAZ: Cyprus is asking for help from Europe on immigration

by

“Cyprus seeks help from Europe” is the headline of an article in the German newspaper Die Tageszeitung (TAZ), which notes that “more and more migrants are arriving through the Turkish north.”

The daily writes that on Tuesday, the Republic of Cyprus asked other EU countries to accept migrants from overcrowded facilities to relieve the country. More than 12,000 migrants have already arrived since the beginning of the year, said Cypriot Interior Minister Nikos Nouris. According to EU statistics, these are the most asylum applications in an EU country in relation to the population of the country, which in Cyprus reaches one million. Receiving migrants from other EU member states is considered unlikely, as no country has yet agreed to such a thing.

About 90% of migrants arrive in the Republic of Cyprus from the Turkish northern part of the island, and another 10% come by sea. The government accuses Turkey of facilitating this migration to the northern part of Cyprus. “In Nicosia, the Republic of Cyprus recently erected a barbed wire fence about ten kilometers long, which according to political observers is said to be easy to jump over.”
