On this day, February 8, 1980, Nikos Xylouris from Anogeia died in Piraeus at the age of just 43, from cancer.

One of the most important Greek musicians, who contributed decisively to the rescue of Cretan traditional music, Xylouris, with his voice and ethos, marked the years of the junta, the resistance to it, but also the first years of the Postcolonial period.

Nikos Xylouris had the role of the broker and with his voice he stirred up the crowd, who were queuing for a ticket. The nickname “Archangel” was given to him by Jenny Karezi, since every time he went on stage to sing he said: “This man is magical… He has an archangelic form…”

In November 1973, during the days of the uprising, he is inside the Polytechnic University and sings behind the bars with the students, “When will he strip” and “The bad guys entered the city”. The camera captures the moments that make headlines and is a “red flag” for the junta, which censors his songs, bans his concerts and closes the store where he sings. His voice had become a symbol of resistance during the years of the junta.

His death plunged the whole of Greece into mourning and his funeral was pallaic. Thousands of people, named and anonymous, accompanied him to his last residence, in the First Cemetery of Athens and then said goodbye to the “Archangel of Crete” by singing “Evale o Theos cinnis”.
