Historic rise of the Men’s National Team to World Group 1 of the Davis Cup
Deipnosophistiorion was a proud sponsor of DAVIS CUP 2023: Greece – Ecuador, which was held at the indoor basketball facilities of OAKA “Nikos Galis” on February 4 & 5, 2022 and during which Greece advanced to World Group 1 of the Davis Cup.
The first day of her meeting National tennis team of of men against Ecuador for the Davis Cup World Group 1 play-offs was impressive with him Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Aristotle Thanos to win and make it 2-0 in victories, bringing our representative group one step away from promotion.
Stefanos Tsitsipas struggled only in the 1st set against world No. 731, Alvaro Guillen, but then had no problem giving Greece his first win 7-5, 6-2 in the meeting with Ecuador.
Next came the match of Aristotle Thanos who scored a big win against Andre Andrade 7-6(4), 6-4, making it 2-0 for Greece who are now one win away from promotion to World Group I. Worth it note that Thanos beat a player who is higher in the world ranking 1014 places!
On the second and final day, Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Andres Andrade 2-0 sets 7-6 (1), 6-1 and so our National Men’s Tennis Team won 3-1 victories of Ecuador and climbed to the World Group 1 of the Davis Cup, making history.
The top Greek tennis player struggled in the 1st set, where both players managed to hold their serve and the score remained tied until the 12th game (6-6). But the continuation was easy for the No. 3 in the world ranking, easily reaching the victory (7-1).
The picture was completely different in the 2nd set with Stefanos leaving no room for reaction to his opponent winning 6-1 and achieving the great goal of the National team.
Earlier, the Petros Tsitsipas and Alexander Skorilas had experienced defeat with 2-0 sets (7-6(4), 6-4), against Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo, after 2 hours of play, with the National team of Ecuador reducing to 2-1 wins.
Tsitsipas: “The spectators helped us a lot”
“The truth is that even now that I was here, I was definitely not 100% after the Australian Open, but it was a priority for me to play, regardless of how I felt. I only had two days off, but I managed to find a balance. The spectators were perfect, they helped us a lot these two days” said Stefanos Tsitsipas, immediately after the end of his match.
