Papadopoulos: Turkey moved 3 meters closer to Greece after the earthquake

The well-known seismologist also did not rule out the possibility of the North Anatolia fault being activated after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake

Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos gave explanations for how the tectonic plates moved and the deadly earthquake occurred in Turkey and Syria, speaking today on the First Program 91.6 and 105.8, pointing out that Turkey came three meters closer to Greece.

“The Arabian plate is compressing the Anatolian plate and the Anatolian plate is geographically occupied by Turkey. The slip occurred along the contact of the two plates where the fault is, namely the Anatolian plate. In other words, Turkey was pushed towards the west, towards the Aegean, it slipped by about 3 meters,” he said characteristically.

Mr. Papadopoulos did not rule out the possibility either to activate the North Anatolia fault after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake. “The movement of the lithospheric plates is continuous. From this movement came the break in the fault and the earthquake. And precisely because we have this movement, it is not excluded that the pressure, the trends as we say, will also be transmitted to the North Anatolian fault. There is a possibility because the phenomena are complex, they do not follow strict rules”, he explained.
