Its opposition to a possible boycott of of the 2024 Olympic Games, in case the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus is accepted, the Plenary of the Hellenic Olympic Committee unanimously expresses, after a relevant proposal by Spyros Kapralos. The president of the EOE and member of the IOC pointed out that Greece did not participate in any boycott in the modern history of the Games, underlining that sports and Olympism should not be related to politics.
“Greece has participated in all the Olympic Games since their revival, has not participated in any boycott in the modern history of the Olympic Games and respects the Olympic Charter. Sports and Olympism should not be related to politics and a possible boycott of the Olympic Games will mainly affect the athletes who are preparing hard to realize their big dream, which is to participate in the top sporting event. We are therefore against any discrimination between athletes”, Mr. Kapralos pointed out, among other things, in his proposal, which was unanimously accepted by the Plenary.
In its decision, the IOC underlines that “the possible reinstatement of the athletes from Russia and Belarus will be subject to strict conditions for their participation as stated in the IOC statement of January 25, 2023”. Also, the Hellenic Olympic Committee requests:
– To continue the sanctions against Russia and Belarus, which have been decided by the International Olympic Committee and the world Olympic movement.
– To continue and intensify solidarity with Ukrainian athletes and the Ukrainian Olympic community, in order to, among other things, have a strong Ukrainian Team at the Olympic Games “Paris 2024” and “Milano Cortina 2026”.
– Finally, the Hellenic Olympic Committee is in agreement with the non-participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the European Games to be held in the summer of 2023 in Krakow, Poland.
