“Ukraine and Britain have overcome the fear of war,” the Ukrainian president said earlier in the British Parliament

Ukrainian President Zelensky met King Charles at Buckingham Palace, as part of his visit to the United Kingdom.

It is the first time that the monarch meets Zelensky.

“Ukraine and Britain have overcome the fear of war,” Zelensky told the British Parliament earlier

British MPs from both houses, the Commons and the Lords, gathered in the main hall of the Parliament of Westminster to listen to the speech of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky who has been in London since the morning for an official visit.

Standing, hundreds of MPs greeted him with a standing ovation in a “rare show” of solidarity described by Commons Speaker Lindsay Hale who welcomed him to the floor. Characteristically, the country’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the leader of the main opposition Keir Starmer, putting aside their political differences, stood next to each other and applauded. An indication that the United Kingdom stands with the Ukrainian people.

“Fighting for your homeland is not just a fight for the borders of your country, but a fight for freedom and democracy,” said Lindsay Heil, among others, shortly before giving the speech to the Ukrainian president.

In turn, President Zelensky began his speech by saying that “I came here and stand before you in the name of all Ukrainians who are fighting for their freedom, and on their behalf I would like to thank you for your valuable help.”

Among other things, he emphasized that “London is on the side of Kiev from the first moment”. He made special mention of Boris Johnson’s contribution, noting that his important help united all allies on the side of Ukraine.

“Ukraine and Britain overcame the fear of war”, President Zelensky underlined while pointing out that “we have already achieved remarkable results”. But as he said “the evil remains and the battle continues” but he said he was convinced that this would be defeated. “We will defeat evil and I know very well that our victory will change the world,” the president of Ukraine pointedly noted.

On Britain’s help, he said that the United Kingdom was helping his country even before the invasion of Russia. He was involved in the procurement of the armored Challenger 2 but also the training of Ukrainians in England to use them effectively. “Your help is not only important for the future of Ukraine, but also for the future of Europe,” Zelensky stressed.

In a symbolic act, he presented the Speaker of the Parliament with a Ukrainian pilot’s helmet with the inscription “we have freedom, give us wings to protect it”.

Later today the Ukrainian president will meet with King Charles.
