Chouliaras on SKAI: No one can rule out a major earthquake in Greece – What would be the consequences

by

“Historically we have had earthquakes of this magnitude, so no one can rule out the possibility of one of this magnitude in the Greek area” said Mr. Chouliaras.

“We are on the fourth day after the two strong earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, this fault is too far from Greece to affect it, to transfer trends, the distance is too great” he said speaking on Thursday morning on his television SKAI the professor of Seismology, Gerasimos Chouliaras.

He explained that the term domino does not refer to the tectonic plates: The epicenter, he explained, is more than 1,000 km from the Greek space.

And he continued: “We saw the domino effect immediately after the 7.8 Richter, after the first earthquake, in 9 hours, 1,000 km above, there was a 7.5 Richter earthquake.”

When asked if there could be an earthquake of this magnitude in Greece, he replied: “Historically we have had earthquakes of this magnitude, so no one can rule out the possibility of an earthquake of this magnitude in the Greek area. There are 3-4 such examples of equivalent sizes in the past, so no one can rule it out.”

When asked what the consequences of such an earthquake would be, he said: “It would have smaller effects, our buildings are better than what we see in Turkey, we have better infrastructure. Also, we have the beneficial thing in the geodynamics of Greece, that most strong earthquakes occur in underwater areas, so the phenomenon is attenuated”.

Mr. Chouliaras concluded: “Buildings are what we have to pay attention to, constant checks on buildings and infrastructure are the main things. If we commit to them, we’ll be fine.”
