“The rift in Antioch means nothing for the Greek area, all the comparisons made by colleagues are not correct” said the president of the OASP – Why did the buildings in Turkey fall like paper towers
The president of OASP, professor Efthimios Lekkas, who spoke on Saturday morning from Antioch on the show “Morning” with Giorgos Autias, was completely reassuring in the face of concerns that the earthquake in Turkey could affect the Greek area.
“I am north of Antioch, in the center of the destruction. The extent of the disaster is approximately equal to mainland Greece, it is 500 km long and 20 to 40 km wide. That is where the bulk of the damage is located,” he said and continued:
“The rift in Antioch means nothing for the Greek area, all the comparisons made by colleagues in the office – and I’m sorry to say so – are not correct. There is no connection to the rift we saw first.”
He explained that this fault delimits the disaster area and dictates the type of disasters. The approximately 30,000 collapses were caused by tectonic subsidence. From this we have to formulate the anti-seismic regulations”.
He also noted that “in Greece, the anti-seismic regulations are much stronger, such damage would not happen in Greece, it cannot be compared, there is no comparison”.
He emphasized that in Turkey:
1. earthquake regulations are not strict and not enforced
2. the buildings are of degraded quality
3. the configuration of the building frame is wrong
4. the Turks show more care in architecture than in seismic shielding
And Mr. Lekkas concluded: “To dispel the concerns of all Greeks, because things are being heard that are unacceptable and excessive. In Greece there is no chance of seeing an earthquake of this order. […] There must be moderation from all colleagues, because the world does not need to know. I say explicitly and unequivocally there is no connection between the fault that caused Monday’s earthquake and the Greek area”.
