The landslides that swept through central and southern Peru after heavy rains killed 18 people, injured 27 others, while 20 are still missing, according to the latest official provisional death toll, released yesterday Friday by the national civil protection institute ( INDEX).

The previous official tally of the back-to-back landslides, which began on Sunday, put the death toll at 16.

Seventeen of the victims died in landslides on Sunday afternoon in the Mariano Valcarcel district of Camana province, west of the city of Arequipa and about 840 kilometers south of the capital Lima.

The 18th victim died in the central Hunin region, 310 kilometers east of the capital, when a landslide hit “in the early hours” of Friday following “heavy rains” there, according to INDECI.

In Arequipa, houses, schools, health facilities and roads were destroyed. According to its captain, there is a strong possibility that gold miners are trapped in collapsed or flooded galleries.

Peruvian President Dina Bolluarte, who has been facing a popular uprising since December, with a central demand for her to leave office, dissolve parliament and immediately call early presidential and parliamentary elections, visited the affected area on Tuesday and inspected the air damage in the sector, where many mines operate.
