A relative of a victim of the tragic train accident in Tempi is incarcerated in a Turkish prison.

According to diplomatic sources, the prisoner has submitted a request to the prison for permission to attend the funeral.

As the same sources reported, in their communication yesterday, the family of the Greek prisoner requested the assistance of the Greek Consulate in Adrianople, in order to grant permission, for humanitarian reasons, to the prisoner in question to attend the exodus of his relative.

Following the instructions of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, the Greek consul immediately contacted the competent Turkish prosecutor’s office and requested emergency permission to visit the Greek citizen, without meeting the weekly deadline.

The requested permission to visit was granted exceptionally and this morning (03.03.2023) the meeting in question is expected to take place.

At the same time, a meeting was also requested with the head of the competent General Prosecutor’s Office of Raidestos, in order to transfer the relevant request of the Greek citizen.

In addition, within the framework of the instructions of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, the Embassy of Greece in Ankara immediately sent, yesterday, a Verbal Communication to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighting the humanitarian nature of the request.

At the same time, telephone communications have also been carried out by the Greek embassy, with the Bilateral Relations and Consular Affairs departments of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the afternoon hours today, a meeting will take place, on the same issue, between the Greek ambassador in Ankara and the secretary general of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The acceptance or not of the request for “special permission for humanitarian reasons” falls under the exclusive competence of the Turkish authorities.
