Tzanakis in SKAI: When will the pandemic wave peak with 52,000 cases

by

Our country is facing the outbreak of two different coronavirus mutations, Delta and Omicron, as he explained the professor of pulmonology Nikos Tzanakis speaking on SKAI TV and the show “Unmatched”.

As Delta said it is here as it constitutes 10% and in some areas 20% of the cases and as it is very contagious it continues to cause deaths, intubation and hospitalization. The rise of the Delta, according to the professor, is also the reason that the pressure in the health system is maintained.

“When we have 25,000, 30,000 and 35,000 (cases) and 20% of them are Delta, which can be more, we have 5,000 and 6,000 Delta. The rest are Omicrons who are not supposed to put pressure on the system “, he noted characteristically.

For Omikron, Mr. Tzanakis said that this week the specialists will have the first data on the patients who carry this mutation, while in two to three weeks they will find out its effect on intubation and death.

I’m scared of positivity – Up to 52,000 cases at the peak of the wave

The professor said that the peak of the pandemic wave is expected between January 18 and 25. His team’s mathematical model predicts 48,000 to 52,000 cases of coronavirus, which means that the daily peaks may be even higher.

Mr. Tzanakis said that the positivity index scares him as yesterday with relatively few tests (80,000) it reached 22.7% which means that one in four samples were positive.

He explained that when many tests are done for example 650,000 then the cases will reach 65,000 with a positivity index of around 10%.

“These numbers are realistic I’m telling you,” he said.

To open one week after schools

The professor suggested that the schools be reopened a week later in order to examine the data for the Omicron mutation and that this week be replenished at Easter or at the end of the year.

He clarified that he is not talking about a return to e-learning, but logic should prevail and the data should be examined. He turned the arrows against those who say that nowhere in the world are closed to schools, citing the example of Portugal.
