On Sunday, the professor of Transportation Engineering of the Democritus University of Thrace and a member of the expert committee for Tempi spoke on the show Kalimera with Giorgos Autias Vassilis Profyllides.

“I cannot go into the essence of the case, however as a professor whose scientific books are read all over the world I can speak and say that the degree of subjectivity is from very little to zero. Therefore, the exact scientific analysis of the data can determine the truth to the maximum extent” said Mr. Profyllides and added:

“From my side, every effort will be made so that scientific knowledge is available to the Greek society, which will be informed,” he added.

Asked if the two trains could have been stopped, he replied: “The railway is a heavy system and has a long braking distance depending on the speed. From what I hear about train speeds, the passenger train needs at least 1,000 meters and up to 1,500 meters, because the braking is not automatic and absolute, the other would need about 500 meters.

Therefore even at a distance of 3 km facing each other it could have been prevented.”

He noted that since the 1980s when the development of railways in Europe was decided, the dominant element was safety.

Regarding the Athens-Thessaloniki line, he said that it should have uniform technological and functional characteristics and emphasized that “we will look at the contracts one by one to see if this is the case”.

He added that if there were uniform technological and operational characteristics from the beginning, then every contract would be obliged to conform to those characteristics.

“Every effort will be made on my part to analyze every element that had a share of responsibility for this tragedy to happen,” said Mr. Profilellidis and continued: “The order we have from the State is to make a record, which starting from the details that led to this event will look for the causes that brought us here.”

Finally, he characterized the journalist’s comment that an inexperienced station master managed such a central station as that of Larissa as the essence of the case.
