The construction of the Hydra wastewater treatment plant with funding of 9,964,350 euros, through the PEP 2014-2020, was launched with the signing of the relevant contract by the regional governor of Attica, Giorgos Patoulis, and the contractor, in the presence of the vice-regional governor of Nision St. Voidonikolas, the mayor G. Koukoudakis, the Director of Technical Works of Piraeus and the Islands S. Pagotelis, et al.

The purpose of the project is the collection and treatment of the sewage of the settlement of Hydra with the consequence of improving the quality of life of the citizens with an emphasis on the protection of the environment and the service of tourists.

On the occasion of the signing of the contract, the regional governor pointed out that the project solves a serious problem that has plagued Hydra for decades, noting that the securing of funding and its launch was achieved: “With systematic work and close cooperation with the Municipality of Hydra and the co-competent bodies, the executives of the Attica Region managed to resolve any issues and proceed with the implementation of a project that Hydra so badly needs. The Region of Attica will continue to support the local and touristic development of Hydra, which is one of the gems of Attica, with vital projects and with significant funding.

For his part, the mayor G. Koukoudakis emphasized that this is a project that will further upgrade the tourist infrastructure of the island and raise the standard of living of the residents. He thanked the Region but also “the prime minister and those who intervened on this thorny problem of the Hydra and secured the funding and the required area for the installation of the project in question. Delays, bureaucracy, anchorages and obstacles were overcome because there was stubbornness and determination. Hydra deserves these infrastructures and can look to the future with optimism,” he pointed out.
