There were no shortage of moments of tension, when a resident of Mati, listening to the questions, shouted that the witness with the answers he gives “tells you that the chief and the deputy chief of the Fire Department were useless”
For the eighth day the judicial expert Dimitris Liotsiosconsidered the most important witness in the trial for tragedy in Matiwas on the stand taking questions from defense attorneys.
Mr. Liotsios, answering the questions of a lawyer appearing in support of the Charge for the loss of his mother, said that on the fateful afternoon of July 23, 2018 “the Coastal Search and Rescue Center was informed that there are people in the sea by the corresponding service in Denmark because there were twelve Danish citizens in the sea”.
During today’s hearing, the questions from the victims’ advocates were completed and the examination of the prosecutor Dimitris Liotsios by the defendants’ advocates began. During the process there were no shortage of moments of tension, such as when a woman, a resident of Mati, listening to the questions from the defense side, said aloud that the witness with the answers he gives “he tells you that the chief and deputy chief of the Fire Department were useless.”
From the victim’s side, the expert was asked if he believes that since the relevant defendants were aware of the circumstances “they had accepted that the world would burn”, Mr. Liotsios answered that “that will be decided by the court”. The inspector was also asked if the Coast Guard directed the ships to another port and not that of Rafina and he replied that from the result it appeared that such a thing was not implemented, pointing out that he does not know if there was such a recommendation or order.
At the beginning of the questions from the advocate of the then Fire Chief Sotiris Terzoudis, when Mr. Liotsios heard her point out that in his report he states that “the state apparatus was taken by surprise” he answered her: “The Fire Service cannot be taken by surprise. From the result, it showed. The Fire Department should not be surprised! The surprise was unjustified…the state apparatus should not have been surprised.”
Advocate: Could the air force operate on the main front?
Witness: From the moment the fire entered the ravine, the situation was more difficult. But until 6:10 p.m., the fire was still burning.
Advocate: I ask if they could contribute substantially…
Witness: From the moment the fire entered the ravine it took out all its effects. At that point it was difficult…the water evaporates until it reaches the ravine. Whatever had to be done had to be done before it went into the ravine. A much better job could be done and the aerials could be attempted more comfortably. Of course, if they tried…
The trial continues.
