Crete: Which Municipality “resists” the low birth rate in Greece

by

“Champions” in births seem to be the people of Chania, showing the way to the rest of the country plagued by low birth rates.

In 2021 in the Municipality of Chania a significant increase of births, cohabitation agreements and marriages was recorded, always according to the data given today, Tuesday, to the public by the city registry.

In particular, in 2021, a total of 1,849 births were recorded, marking an increase of 11% compared to 2020, when 1,667 were registered. Marginal increase (2%) is recorded in deaths, 833 in 2021, compared to 819 in 2020, while there was a significant increase in marriages and cohabitation agreements made last year. In any case, births overwhelmingly prevail over deaths, a balance that you no longer meet often in our country …

In 2021 in the Municipality of Chania 435 marriages took place, 23% more than in 2020, when 355 had taken place and 231 cohabitation agreements were signed, compared to 152 in 2020 (52% increase). Finally, 164 divorces were issued, marginally reduced compared to 2020, when 168 were registered.

It is noted that according to the data provided by ELSTAT on December 30, the permanent population of the country on January 1, 2021 is estimated at 10,678,632 people (5,196,048 men and 5,482,584 women) reduced by 0.37% compared to the corresponding population as of January 1, 2020 which was 10,718,565 people.

This development is a result of the natural decrease of the population that amounted to 45,902 people (84,767 births versus 130,669 deaths of people with habitual residence within the Greek territory) and the net migration estimated at 6,384 people (positive balance).
