“The “Hymn to Freedom” always remains relevant and instructive, full of contemporary messages about unity, faith in noble goals, courage and self-sacrifice, from which we can derive ideals and values for our present and future”, says the minister
By completing 200 years old from the composition of “Hymn to Freedom» as a trigger, the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Niki Kerameosaddresses this year’s message about her March 25th.
“The “Hymn to Freedom” always remains relevant and instructive, full of contemporary messages about unity, faith in noble goals, courage and self-sacrifice, from which we can derive ideals and values for our present and future”, says the minister.
The ode, by Dionysios Solomos, set to music by Nikolaos Mantzaros, and since 1865 the national anthem of Greece, is, as the minister emphasizes, “a real ode to Freedom and the ideals defended by the heroes of the Revolution of 1821, who relentlessly sought “either victory or death”. He also characterizes it as a living testimony of the time: “The poet captures in the Hymn to Freedom, among other things, the attitude of the foreign powers of the time towards our liberating struggle, the numerical superiority of the enemy and the bravery with which it was defied, the national division, the beauties, customs and traditions of our country, the difficulties faced by the fighters and the persistence and determination with which the Greeks pursued their Freedom, as the supreme good».
“March 25th marks the beginning of the glorious Revolution of ’21 to shake off the Turkish yoke from Greece and is celebrated by Greek men and women everywhere with pride and honor for the heroes and heroines who valiantly fought for our Freedom“, concludes Ms. Kerameos in her message.
