The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of the University of Crete is saddened by the sudden death of 65-year-old professor Thanasis Fidas, who was found dead in his office late Tuesday afternoon by his colleagues.

The professor was being looked for by his partner, who was in Athens these days, as he was not answering her persistent calls.

The woman informed his colleagues who were worried, went to his office where they found him dead.

The Department, early in the morning, this Wednesday, issued a modest announcement, with which it informed the Foundation about the loss of Athanasios Feidas, who since 1991 offered his services continuously to the University of Crete, stating: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected loss of our beloved colleague Professor Thanasis Feidas. Thanasis served in our Department since 1991. His untimely death leaves a void that cannot be filled. We express our deepest condolences to his family.”

The president of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Theodoulos Garefalakis tells Cretalive that “it is a shock for us, we saw the man every day, he was an active member of the department, we saw him, we talked to him. It was something completely unexpected. He leaves a void behind him”
