“In Kyoto, records of the timing of cherry blossom festival celebrations dating back to the 9th century reconstruct past climate and demonstrate local warming associated with global warming and urbanization,” according to earlier work published in the scientific journal Biological.
Yasuyuki Aono, a researcher at Osaka Prefectural University, tracked the data back to 812.
“I have searched and collected the phenological data for the full flowering date of cherry (Prunus jamasakura) from many diaries and chronicles written by emperors, aristocrats, governors and monks in Kyoto during the historical era,” he wrote.
