Speed zones with a limit of 30 km/h in the city and the improvement of the infrastructures result in increasing the levels of road safety. According to an analysis of data by the Swiss Council for the Prevention of Accidents (BFU) a reduction in the number of accidents was found between 11% and 66% in the zones where the new low speed limits have been introduced.

The BFU created the digital platform EVAMIR (evaluation of road infrastructure measures) in 2014 and based on this data, it analyzes and reviews all the upcoming changes that are taking place. The BFU found that reducing the speed limit to 30 km/h led to a reduction in the number of serious accidents according to data from almost 600 zones in force in Switzerland today. The study concluded that the creation of the zones reduced the number of serious accidents by 38% on average, while the BFU is again calling for a change in the management of speed-restricted traffic in zones where the limit is currently greater than 30km/h .

Corresponding decisions are expected in the coming weeks at Belgium, which is also expected to introduce low-speed zones. Something similar is expected to happen in the near future in Wales, which has set September 17 as the date for the implementation of a new 30 km/h limit on residential roads and residential areas with high pedestrian activity.
