The land and water areas of the Neda gorge, in the regional units of Messinia and Ilia, are classified as Protected Landscapes and Protected Natural Formations, with a relevant decision of the General Directorate of Environmental Policy of the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

As it became known, a Ministerial Decision of the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Giorgos Amyras, will then be signed, which will set the conditions for protection in the area, which includes part of the gorge, the Stomio cave, the waterfalls of the Neda river and is located between settlements Stomio and Figaleia of the Municipality of Zaharos and Platania of the Municipality of Trifylia.

The need to protect the area was scientifically documented by a study by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPECA).

As stated by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Giorgos Amyras: “The Neda Gorge is a beautiful, but also sensitive natural ecosystem of the Peloponnesian countryside. He should have been put under protection a long time ago. We start with environmental restoration of areas that affect the geomorphology of the canyon, we remove the garbage and throw our weight into the sustainable management of the ecosystem.”
