The further tightening of excellent relations Greece and Israel, through the strengthening of cooperation and exchange of good practices between Athens and Tel Aviv, agreed in a meeting held by the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis and the Mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai.

Mr. Bakoyiannis welcomed Mr. Huldai to the Athens City Hall, the longest-serving mayor of the Israeli capital whom he characterized as a model mayor, as he is currently serving his 5th term in the municipality of Tel Aviv, and pointed out that the two historic cities have a lot to gain from their cooperation.

“We also have a lot to learn from you,” Mr. Huldai replied to Mr. Bakoyannis, sending him an official invitation to visit Tel Aviv in the near future.

During the meeting, the two Mayors noted that the two cities have common characteristics and common problems and agreed that cooperation always leads to finding, sharing and implementing the best solutions.

As far as the individual sectors are concerned, the discussion focused on the network of social solidarity, structures and programs to support citizens and especially vulnerable groups, analyzing the good practices followed by both Athens and Tel Aviv.

Mr. Bakoyiannis mentioned on the digital “leap” that the Municipality of Athens has done, providing faster and better -remote- service to citizens, reducing the burden of bureaucracy and significantly improving the services provided. At the same time, he mentioned the projects to upgrade the city’s infrastructure in order to achieve the goal of sustainability and to deal with the effects of climate change.

Mr. Bakoyannis showed particular interest in the way the famous Tel-Aviv Foundation operates. An important institution that has been in existence since 1977, and which, through grants from state agencies and private individuals, helps the municipal authority of the city in the implementation of development projects and social programs.

There was similar interest from the Mayor of Tel Aviv for the pioneering program “Adopt your city”, which the Municipality of Athens uses with excellent results, to strengthen and improve infrastructure and promote support for its social actions.
