The residents of Florina were thrown out of their homes in fear after the strong earthquake of 5.3 on the Richter scale that occurred at 23.43 at 2 km west of Florina and with a focal depth of 14.1 km.
At least 37 aftershocks have followed, with the strongest 4.2 on the Richter scale recorded 10 minutes after the initial quake, 10 km north of Florina.
Several citizens have posted videos on social media since the horrific moment of the earthquake.
In the call center of the Fire Department, there were reports of small damage inside apartments – mainly on the top floor of apartment buildings – while according to the mayor of Florina, Vassilis Giannakis, three balconies of houses have been severely damaged.
Photos of damaged homes have been published by local media.
The primary and secondary schools and the kindergartens in the Florina Prefecture will remain closed today, for precautionary reasons.
The relevant decision was taken by the mayors of Florina (Vassilis Giannakis), Amynteos (Anthimos Bitakis) and Prespa (Panagiotis Paschalidis).
